MOL COMFORT update: aft part sank, containers lost

After boxship MOL COMFORT broke into two parts, both freely floating in adverse weather on the Indian Ocean between Yemen and India (see our previous news coverage ), MOL now had to confirm that the aft section sank after ingress of water and slow but steady loss of conatiners.

MOL reports: About 1,700 containers aboard the aft part sank with this section of the vessel. Some are confirmed floating near the site. About 1,500 metric tons of fuel oil was estimated to be aboard in the tanks of the aft part. No large volume of oil leakage is confirmed at this moment.

The company sent out several tugs and patrol boats to monitor the drifting sections. The fore part is currently being towed stably with majority of cargo aboard.
