Innovative wind-powered freighter

Many engineers have been working on alternative fuels to make shipping more eco-efficient. To achieve this a Norwegian engineer has developed an innovative vessel recently. This vessel would be capable to save 60 percent of the average fuel consumption of a container ship.

The idea is that a vessel will not use heavy fuel, but will utilize a combination of LNG and wind energy for propulsion. Accordingly, the main highlight of the ship is it sail-shaped hull, allowing the vessel to sail close to the wind and using it for propulsion, while in low-wind conditions an eco-efficient and cost-effective propulsion engine powered by LNG will take over.

The Norwegian engineer plans to calculate the vessel's route with the help of a computer that collects and analyses weather and sea state information. The captain can then decide if he wants to take the quickest route or the most economical one.

The innovative vessel will be capable to carry up to 7000 cars onboard.
