One Apus Discharges Cargo in Long Beach After Losing Around 2000 Containers Last Year

Last week, under very little media attention, ONE Apus discharged its cargo at the Port of Long Beach, after losing around 2000 containers in the Pacific Ocean last year.

Our AIS data shows that the ship is currently in the port of San Francisco, after discharging cargo in Long Beach over a week ago. On its way to San Francisco, the ship reported drifting fit a considerable amount of time, possibly due to the port congestion affecting the port of Los Angeles.

En route to Long Beach from China, the ONE Apus lost approximately 1816 containers overboard, when heavy weather struck the ship. Most of the containers contained hazardous substances, and over hundreds remained damages on board when the ship reached Kobe.

In a press release on 2nd December 2020, the company said, "Ocean Network Express (ONE) is currently assisting owners and managers of container ship ONE APUS with investigations into the loss of containers overboard during severe inclement weather on 30 November 2020 as the vessel was transiting the Pacific Ocean."

In mid-March, the ONE Apus departed from Kobe, Japan, where the ship underwent cargo removal and reordering, as well as essential repairs.

Marking as one of the worst weather-related losses of cargo from ships, it formed a part of a pattern of container losses in the trans-Pacific during the pre-Christmas period last year. It was the time when consumer demands across North America began picking up to the pre-pandemic era and marked a sudden rush in ships from Asia to North America and Europe.

The Japanese flagged ship operates on ONE's Far East Pacific 2 (FP2) Service, hosting a capacity of 14,000 TEU.
