$3.6 Million Worth of Illegal Opioid Seized in Nigeria

Nigerian Customs in the Seme region intercepted a Maersk container with adult nappies, but upon inspection, 100 cartons of the powerful painkiller Tramadol were found hidden. In mid-November, Bello Jibo, Customs Area Controller, said that the container was passed to the Nigerian authorities by the Republic of Benin. Mr. Jibo explained that the customs agency invited the stakeholders and other security agencies on 20th December to witness the examination of the container. He added that officials found 100 illegal cartons of Gabadol 120mg during the investigation, suspected to be Tramadol, along with 200 packages of adult diapers.

The samples of the seized drugs have been handed over to the National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control for confirmation. The police have not made any arrests in connection to the seizure. The spokesperson of AP Moller-Maersk said that they have not yet received any notice related to the case. Without commenting anything specific about the case, the spokesperson said that Maersk, in general, is committed to conducting its business lawfully and responsibly, maintaining respect for the broader economic, environmental and social impact of its activities.

Maersk officials said that the company has guidelines for the staff to help with booking and screening cargo and stay alert for anything suspicious or unusual.
