Waves Smash Windscreen of Elbe Ferry in Germany

Storm front "Ylenia" had the north of Germany under control on Thursday. This morning will be remembered for a long time, especially by the passengers on the TOLLERORT Elbe ferry: Suddenly, the waves broke through the ferry's front window.

Northern Germany is familiar with strong storms. But there has never been an incident like this, as HADAG Managing Director Tobias Haack explained. The Elbe ferry TOLLERORT was on line 68 from Teufelsbrück to the Airbus factory ferry dock on Thursday morning. Again and again, the waves hit the ship. Airbus employee Dirk Papendorf wanted to see the spectacle up close and sat down in the first row. In an interview with the German press agency, he explained: "I thought it was great how the ship rocked back and forth, like a roller coaster." He was glad that the ferry ran at all and felt completely safe at all times. "I could even take a quick look into the wave," added the 32-year-old.

But then one of the waves smashed through the ship's windscreen. The water masses hit Dirk Papendorf head-on. Then he just ran to the back like the other passengers - afraid the floods would pull him outside. However, since the water was draining backwards, he ran back and looked after his colleague. Luckily it stayed with this wave.

Numerous videos are circulating on the internet showing the incident from inside the ferry:

Dirk Papendorf suffered several cuts from the glass splinters in the accident. Two other passengers suffered minor injuries as well. All of them could leave the ferry on foot and were then treated by the company doctor at the Airbus plant.

The water police are now investigating the incident. According to Haack, it should be checked why the safety glass was not able to withstand the waves.
