Russian mega yachts to be confiscated? UPDATE hunt for Russian mega yachts
Spanish Maritime Authorities requested from all Spain Marinas to provide Government information on all mega yachts (length 24 meters and above), presently at Spanish Marinas, if they’re owned, or related to, Russian citizen and Russian interests. There are practically no mega yachts registered under Russian flag, Russian yachts might be identified as such only via true ownership. There’s a strong possibility, that all Russia-owned mega yachts will be detained, and probably, even confiscated. Among first to be identified is 78-meter mega yacht TANGO, owned by billionaire Viktor Vekselberg. She’s docked at yacht repair yard Astilleros de Mallorca.
Comment: No doubt a great majority of common Russians living on the verge or beyond poverty, will welcome this news.
UPDATE: Mega yacht, Clio, owned by Oleg Deripaska, the founder of the Russian aluminum group Rusal who was sanctioned by the US in 2018, dropped anchor off Mala, the capital of the Maldives, on Mar 1, AFP said, citing port officials. At least two other superyachts owned by Russian billionaires set sail for the Maldives shortly after Western nations threatened to seize assets from sanctioned oligarchs, according to data from MarineTraffic reported by CNBC.
In a tweet dated Feb 26, the White House said: "This coming week, we will launch a multilateral Transatlantic task force to identify, hunt down, and freeze the assets of sanctioned Russian companies and oligarchs — their yachts, their mansions, and any other ill-gotten gains that we can find and freeze under the law."
