Carnival Corp Offers Its Cruise as Shelter to Ukrainian Refugees

The number of Ukrainian refugees is up to 4 million and climbing. Relief organizations and governments are under duress to provide accommodations and food. Carnival Corp has offered one of its cruise vessels, the COSTA MAGICA belonging to its Italian subsidiary, "Costa Cruises," to house displaced Ukrainian refugees entering Italy. It serves as a temporary hub if the influx of refugees becomes challenging to handle.

Costa Cruises is not alone in offering aid to the unfolding humanitarian crisis. Naming a few examples of shipping companies coming forward and offering help: River cruise company "Ama Waterways" has offered its vessels to serve as housing, then there is AIDA Cruises, Carnival's German subsidiary that has donated medical supplies. The Polish shipowner Polferries has offered to transport Ukrainian refugees to Sweden free of charge.

Carnival Corp has offered to reactivate the COSTA MAGICA, replete with staff and supplies for this purpose, as it has been lying idle since the pandemic. The ship is intended to serve as a temporary hub for processing and relocating refugees. The COSTA MAGICA has a passenger capacity of 2,700 people, but 3,470 people could be accommodated aboard the vessel with the extra berths. The river cruise company Ama Waterways has offered two riverboats docked side by side in Amsterdam to provide temporary accommodations for Ukrainian refugees arriving in the Netherlands.
